The question of media accountability:

Recent calls have been made towards a more regulated press, following allegations of media privacy invasion and phone hacking, fake news, and even accusations of corporate interests and lobbyists manipulating headlines, public opinion and elections. How should European countries ensure the media is able to fulfil its regulatory purpose in comprehensively, accurately and objectively informing the general public?

Dear Delegates,

We, the chairing team of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, are proud to welcome you to the upcoming MEP National Session in Linz/Wels in January 2018.

As there are only a few weeks left until the start of the session, we would like to encourage you to familiarise yourself thoroughly with our committee issue.

The topic we will be dealing with is the question of media accountability: “Recent calls have been made towards a more regulated press, following allegations of media privacy invasion and phone hacking, fake news, and even accusations of corporate interests and lobbyists manipulating headlines, public opinion and elections. How should European countries ensure the media is able to fulfil its regulatory purpose in comprehensively, accurately and objectively informing the general public?”

Good preparation is the prerequisite for productive and determined committee work and therefore, we have compiled several links, pdfs and other pieces of information to help you doing so. Read through them carefully and also feel free to do additional research.

We are looking forward to meeting you and wish you all the best; please be in touch if you have any questions!

On behalf of your Committee Chairing team,

Markus Bencsits, Committee President (ma.ben@gmx.at)
